Birmingham City Council
10 Woodcock Street
Birmingham
B7 4BL

Following the success of the last event in Sth Cambridgeshire in January, Birmingham City Council, in conjunction with esd-toolkit and MetaCompliance Limited, is hosting a 1 day conference exploring how organisations can navigate and overcome the pitfalls of information governance. The Information Commissioner’s Office will provide a different perspective and will explore good practice and common development areas identified through its audit work.

There is no doubt that Information Governance is an issue across the public sector as budget cuts and the resulting upheaval, media scrutiny of public sector data breaches and increasing fines have led to worry and confusion. Bringing together the ICO, and two of the most well respected programmes in the Information Governance arena, this event will help clarify and make better sense of some of the most tricky information governance issues for you.

Key features of the day:

Alvin West, Team Manager (Audit) and David Simmons, Lead Auditor, Information Commissioner's Office will explain the work of the Good Practice team. The ICO carries out audits to provide larger organisations with an assessment of whether they are following good data protection practice. Sometimes, and with the consent of the public authority, these audits also look at the way organisations handle requests for information under the Freedom of Information Act. During the day we will learn more about the ICO audit plan together with practical examples of good practice and common areas for improvement. We will also provide an overview of some of the work that the ICO Good Practice team will be conducting during 2012.

MetaCompliance: Making Compliance Easier
Anna Kelpie from MetaCompliance Limited, the market leading policy management and user awareness software company, will present a workshop outlining a best practice approach to user awareness for information governance. Entitled "Making Compliance Easier" the workshop will look at the key elements of a best practise user awareness strategy, and how organisations can use both hi-tech and lo-tech methods to reduce the costs of compliance, whilst improving results. During the workshop, we will explore the components of other successful awareness campaigns, and will outline case studies on how we have worked to help other local authorities put in place a programme of employee awareness and education, in response to ICO audits.

Sheila Apicella from esd-toolkit, the not for profit initiative owned and led by local government, will explain how controlled vocabularies and data standards hosted within esd-toolkit support compliance followed by Tim Adams from the Local Government Association and esd-toolkit who will demonstrate how LG Inform, the new practical response to the sector’s call for greater freedom to take responsibility for its own regulation and improvement, uses these standards.

Click here to see the full agenda

Who should attend? The event is designed for anyone with information governance responsibilities and those working in policy & performance.

Registration is free and lunch and refreshments will be provided. You do not have to be subscribed to esd-toolkit to attend this event.
